Peng Lai Ge Taiwanese Food @ Joo Chiat

An unintended visit to Peng Lai Ge. All along, my knowledge of Taiwanese cuisine has been limited to Din Tai Fung and Shih Lin Street Snacks.

The sparsely furnished layout, the crowd was a little too much for them to handle that night, rendering the place "fullhouse", they opened the "second wing" that was stuffy for us. The kitchen was in full speed but that still caused delay in the food served. I'm pretty sure dumplings were half made and was hastily covered with a plastic sheet when the crowd filled the eatery.

Ginseng tea that tasted sweet.

Pork Chop Lu Rou Fan. The Pork Chop's overfried till the meat was tough, I didn't try the braised egg, I enjoyed the preserved vegetables however.

Egg Roll. The skin's thicker and pastier than popiah wrapped with fried egg and soggy pork floss and finished off with sweet sauce. Did not fancy this one bit.

Ginger Soup with Sweet Potato and Yam Balls for dessert which took eternity of a lifetime to arrive. The waitress was pacing up and down with a packet of frozen balls which I figured belonged to my order. Thankfully this did not disappoint, the ginger soup smelt heavily of ginger, each mouthful of ginger soup sent a warm rush down the throat. The potato and yam balls hardly tasted any different, mainly rice balls but at least they tasted decent.

Overall impression, this place was not prepared for the surge in crowds. Food is disappointing.
